I've noticed that when it comes to weighing element or mode influence astrologers always put more emphasis on the "luminaries" (Sun & Moon) and less on the rest of the personal planets. Most don't consider the outer planets at all. And some give them a symbolical amount of importance- just to show they're there. (Some astrologers consider the Ascendant and Midheaven when determining one's element and mode predominance as well. But that debate is another topic in itself... )Anyway my question is why do we see each planet differently when weighing element or mode predominance but never do so when it comes to house influence? For instance when trying to determine hemisphere influence astrology articles will say something like:" If a person has 4 planets in the western hemisphere and 6 in the eastern hemisphere that person will be more east-oriented(individualistic confident action-driven etc.)". But what if those 4 planets are the Sun. Moon. Mercury and Venus? Won't the luminaries' presence in that particular part of the chart put a heavier emphasis here than the other half that's mostly outer planets?Yes it's true that when it comes to house systems the outer planets are viewed from an individual perspective and their influences are taken "personally" but still shouldn't we also consider the "fields of activity" of each planet? I mean should the Sun-driving force life vitality,ego be put side by side with Jupiter planet of opportunities and luck through outside influences?Thoughts? Sandra,For things like predominance of element mode etc. I look to all seven visible bodies: Sun. Moon. Mars. Mercury. Jupiter. Venus. & Saturn. There are a lot of yogas in vedic astrology that look at all seven planets (not the nodes and not the newly-discovered outer planets). The nabasha yogas are an important set of yogas that only look at these seven bodies but they are basically given equal weight. In Jyotish if more of these seven planets are in fixed signs it is called musala yoga. You will be somebody who doesn't like a lot of change and prefers to do the same thing for a long period of time gradually getting better at it. If something's not working in your life you tend to grin and bear it until you can't stand it anymore. If you have more of these seven planets in cardinal (moveable) signs it's a rajju yoga and your life tends to change more often which can lead to more stress and upheaval. You may have more trouble creating something lasting in life but you have more potential to be an innovator. If you have equal fixed and cardinal or more of these seven planets in mutable (dual) signs you have a nala yoga and you will have both qualities. You can either start new things or follow through with something depending on what's needed. This makes you very adaptable and helpful to have around but often it's somebody else getting the credit for either being the innovative leader or the trustworthy dependable type. DR Hi Sandra,Okay this is my current take on the houses:The houses are really nothing more than the signs entering into the Earth plane with all its different specific locations. Planets are always in signs first and then they fall into houses depending on where on the planet you were born. So the sign of a planet is always going to be more important in terms of determining that planet's nature and behavior. The house shows where and how that nature and behavior gets expressed in your life. Most Vedic astrologers use a very simple house system called whole sign houses. Basically whatever sign your Ascendant falls in that entire sign is your first house. The next sign of the zodiac is the second house the next is the third etc. The signs are the houses. The only reason we even make the distinction is to show from what perspective you are looking at the zodiac. It's usually from the Ascendant but any planet or point in the chart can become the first house with the rest of the signs counted off from that point. There is another set of basic character yogas called the akriti yogas. Akriti means shape and the akriti yogas show what shape the planets formed around your specific birth location when you were born. So these are the yogas that deal with house position. The planets are the producers of things while the signs/houses are what gets produced. House position definitely makes a difference in how a planet expresses itself. Planets in dusthana houses (6. 8. 12) have a more difficult time producing the effects of their own signs/houses. Planets in kendras (1. 4. 7. 10) and trikonas (1. 5. 9) have an easier time producing their effects. But the sign a planet is in is what ultimately determines the nature of the planet and what the effect will actually be. Tyl examines the chart of Mozart without the outer planets and then with them and the difference is stunning. When the outer planets are added so much more of Mozart's uniqueness talent,and individuality become evident. Tyl writes. "People who make history appear to 'need' the outer planets to fulfill their lot." I would say this is true not just for history makers but for everyone though perhaps to varying degrees. I say why do I need to prove anything to anybody but myself... At the end of the day it is me who goes home and closes the door to the rest of the world and enter into one where only I can understand!Though... Sharing is caring! If you are passionate about something and others don't see it your way... Then why does it matter in the long run. Defending a statement takes too much time... I say what others think about me is none of my business... Catchy line! I usally feel the opposite way towards inny/outty planets.... That most people focus on the Outers. That is from a couple of experiments I ran.. when I flipped my chart around... Towards the universal signs.. and the responses that varried differently! What shocked me the most.. was how much more accepting people are of Universal energy.. then of Personal energy.... So how does one loose his talent just because Pluto. Neptune and Uranus don't shine down on them? They don't -How does Jupiter loose its water influence when neptune came to rule Pisces?What is lost about the planet pairing through outer planet inquiries?There are times I don't use the outer planets for chart readings and this in no way means that they are no longer a part of the chart. Inner planetary chains... paint pictures.. way more of a personalized signature. Allen. Virgo cancer virgo -yes. How is it.. that universal energy only gives one the ability to be successful to the point of genius? because its been given that name. And I think the returns make a difference in this conversation. The planets that were for centuries viewed w/the eyes were once the only planets in a persons chart. That is the Sun to Saturn. And with Saturn having a 28 year return it was significant that that at one time was a long life span. The discovery of Uranus happened about the time that Mozart was writing much of his music and I really don't know how weighted Uranus was in his chart but he is considered to be one of the great Aquarians. There are many great Aquarian names (well Capriquarious?) Many were around at the time of that planet being discovered. What am I saying... Oh yes the outer planets are considered generational planets and that means they influence a whole generation. And their RETURN (of that planet into the original place in a natal chart) MAY NOT OCCUR IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFETIME. I am sure there are astrologers on this discussion that know the return estimates of the Outer/Generational planets. So when you look to them they can give you a sense of community. And that is where Aquarius' ruler started. Aquarius signifying unity of the masses. (Just one interpretation,)Uranus transit return in the chart is 82 to 84 years of age and not everyone will live that long to experience that type of transit so you look to the body of people it effects the most. Neptunes transits are even longer and I am not sure when they will have studied the first transit of Pluto since it was discovered only in the 20th century. Also the study of the signifigance of the timing and body of work of the discovery of the outer planets plays a role and the mythology that is chosen to accompany the body in the solar system. I don't go in for weights in a chart they don't really make a lot of sense to me. But then again I am not an eastern astrologer. The scientific and theoretical basis of a planet what it means for the individual and populace is important and the Outer Planets are being studied at a much slower rate than the inner planets. Planets don't make us anything they provide and offer tendencies and trends. How we express or react to them is another thing. I have Uranus in the tenth house trine my parellel stellium as well as is contra parallel to those planets. Perhaps Allan was questioning why the outer planets are seen in that light -I think -but I could be wrong. Personally anything in the angular houses can be a pretty noticeable trait in the natal chart be it; the faster moving planets personal or the generational ones. I have seen some down to earth heavy Uranus themed charts in my day-generally folk with high ended occupations which call for sound structures yet be able to emprovise when it is necessary and very capiable of following guidelines and rules very well too. I thopught that was interestng as here is the idea of innate gifts that he was born with from the start - he was playingthe pianno at 3 composing by 5. He has a Aun/Mercury/Saturn conjunction in Aquarius. Mercury being his chart ruler. That might hint at his understanding of rhythm and pattern. As for his Moon-Pluto conjunction in Sagitarius--well that does make me wonder how much truth there is to the idea that he could and did create terminal jealousy in others of which he might have been blithely - and Sagittarianly - unaware. Although ppl around have called me serious ambitious weird dreamy and sensitive all depending on who was watching me. I guess. The way I see it planets in signs show one's raw potential the aspects show the way this raw energy manifests whether it's subtle(sextiles) or strong cardinal(conjunction) or just easy-flowing(trine) etc. The Houses though are still hard for me to "feel". When I read something about astrology. I always look at myself first of all. Try to see how energies work in me. And so far. I haven't managed to realize whether the house positions show compulsive inclinations or whether they represent areas you choose to focus on conscientiously. But I tend to believe that they are indeed compulsive. With me it's the 9th house cluster that makes me compulsively seek truth higher meanings in life. " That's interesting.. but that would mean u'd express the energy of an element only in the area shown by an angle?I mean if fire rules ur MC u' re only firy in pursuit of social status and finding ur place in the world but maybe not as firy in relationships cuz ur DC is in earth.. or am I completely off target here? It would be interesting to see how the IC channels fire energy then.. would that indicate a hidden passionate nature? Or the other way around what if someone has fire on the IC but no fire planets ( like me..)? Actually. I thought considering the Ascendant in calculating element and mode predominance kinda made sense to me. I came across this one site that weighed the Sun. Moon and Ascendant as equally influential. And personally. I have a lot of the Virgo traits branded in my psychological make-up which I can't explain otherwise since my personal planets are equally divided into Pisces and Gemini influences. Then again it may be that the angles aren't part of the "raw potential" one is endowed with at birth but the Rising being the "physical body" the part of us that's exposed and responsible for "perceiving" the world gives the psyche the "soul" feedback and thus is an important part in shaping our personality from early childhood and throughout our lives. I think the House system that works best for a person is the house system that more accurately reflects their own direct firsthand experience of the forces' (planets) placement. For example if you have Saturn in the 4th House in Placidus and Saturn in the 5th house in Koch. I'd ask myself what area of my life -- between family stuff and creative stuff -- have I experienced the most insecurity ambition to overcome those fears and where i need the most sttructure. In terms of my own astrological practice with clients I do not know. I alternate between both Koch and Placidus if the client is born in the extreme northern or southern hemispheres (arctic curle etc). I use Porphory to avoid the extreme chart distortions that would occur if I used Koch or Placidus there. I do not use the Equal House system though I hear it's good for horary predictions. Not the traditional Calander that is used in astrology but the actually place of occupation of the planets at birth. It is another fetish I am wrapping my head around. Where are the planets NOW. I tried to figure out how to come to grips w/the precession of the equinox and I understand it pretty well. We (my Leonine partner) and I built a model to figure out the earths axis and how it is moving over the centuries. So that made sense and then I just started looking for star charts that show where the planets are NOW today as we speak and write and live. And that puts it into a nice perspective. As you see the planets are still wandering in their courses we just seem to have gotten our timing a bit off by not paying attention. IMOScorpio seems to be one of the more interesting Zodiac signs. Sorry for offending all the other Zodiac signs w/that statement. It is not my intention to be offensive. However Scorpio does occupy a HUGE space in the Zodiac itself making it interesting and the time of year that it traditionally occupies is the time of year of the harvest and that was an intensely important time of year in the Northern Hemisphere there go those capitalizations again. Being a Rising and Sun Sign means you were born very early in the morning around 4 to 6 am and your chart looks like you were born just at Sunrise. Am I right or do I have it backwards. Reading the round flat chart is still a bit puzzling. Where you often in trouble growing up? Hahaha I do find many Scorpio Natives to be rather intense very often self absorbed (even more so than the traditional Leo Native) and changeble. Okay perhaps a sun thrown into the cluster would make it seem blended but i tend to think parallels are blended because there is something very mysterious about two different signs being insynch-I have the jupiter and saturn parallel and that is blended it is as if they were two primary colour made into a secondary colour and I ask you this is green any less of a colour than say yellow and blue ?Infact green is a little more adaptive when you think about it. Planets are always in signs first and then they fall into houses depending on where on the planet you were born. So the sign of a planet is always going to be more important in terms of determining that planet's nature and behavior. The house shows where and how that nature and behavior gets expressed in your life. Most Vedic astrologers use a very simple house system called whole sign houses. Basically whatever sign your Ascendant falls in that entire sign is your first house. The next sign of the zodiac is the second house the next is the third etc. The signs are the houses. The only reason we even make the distinction is to show from what perspective you are looking at the zodiac. It's usually from the Ascendant but any planet or point in the chart can become the first house with the rest of the signs counted off from that point. There is another set of basic character yogas called the akriti yogas. Akriti means shape and the akriti yogas show what shape the planets formed around your specific birth location when you were born. So these are the yogas that deal with house position. The planets are the producers of things while the signs/houses are what gets produced. House position definitely makes a difference in how a planet expresses itself. Planets in dusthana houses (6. 8. 12) have a more difficult time producing the effects of their own signs/houses. Planets in kendras (1. 4. 7. 10) and trikonas (1. 5. 9) have an easier time producing their effects. But the sign a planet is in is what ultimately determines the nature of the planet and what the effect will actually be. David There are more different views on this topic in astrology than there are zodiac signs. I am a Tropical (Western) astrologer and I always include Uranus. Neptune and Pluto when weighing cardinal/fixed/mutable influences as well as fire/earth/air/water. I've been doing this since I first began studying astrology in 1969 and have always found it to be a valid tool for giving an overview of the chart. I don't include the Ascendant or Midheaven but do note the additional influence they may add. (For example. I have 4 planets in air and 4 in fire. 1 in water. 1 in earth. My MC is fire so it gives me an excellent avenue to express my strong fire emphasis. My Ascendant is water and is thus the prime avenue I use to express my one water plaent. And my one earth planet finds its greatest expression through my earth Descendant.)I do know a number of astrologers who also count all of these bodies... but of course others who (like you say) ignore the outer planets when weighting the signs; others who include the MC and Asc; and others who have added Chiron. I even know a few people who have added a few of the asteroids in the weighting. The problem with astrology is that it is an art based on science and as such the interpretations are shaped by the perspective of the artist/astrologer. In some mythical future perhaps we will have serious research proving certain astrological tenets,and disproving others and then we may have hard and fast rules for procedures such as sign weighting. But until we do. I can only say study a lot of charts try different methods of weighting the signs and come to your own conclusions. I cannot imagine not using the outer planets which in the case of some people including myself are extremely prominent in our natal charts for better or worse. In "How to Personalize the Outer Planets," edited by Noel Tyl various astrologers look at how the outer planets can become personalized in people's charts and lives. In his introduction. Tyl examines the chart of Mozart without the outer planets and then with them and the difference is stunning. When the outer planets are added so much more of Mozart's uniqueness talent,and individuality become evident. Tyl writes. "People who make history appear to 'need' the outer planets to fulfill their lot." I would say this is true not just for history makers but for everyone though perhaps to varying degrees. I say why do I need to prove anything to anybody but myself... At the end of the day it is me who goes home and closes the door to the rest of the world and enter into one where only I can understand!Though... Sharing is caring! If you are passionate about something and others don't see it your way... Then why does it matter in the long run. Defending a statement takes too much time... I say what others think about me is none of my business... Catchy line! I usally feel the opposite way towards inny/outty planets.... That most people focus on the Outers. That is from a couple of experiments I ran.. when I flipped my chart around... Towards the universal signs.. and the responses that varried differently! What shocked me the most.. was how much more accepting people are of Universal energy.. then of Personal energy.... So how does one loose his talent just because Pluto. Neptune and Uranus don't shine down on them? They don't -How does Jupiter loose its water influence when neptune came to rule Pisces?What is lost about the planet pairing through outer planet inquiries?There are times I don't use the outer planets for chart readings and this in no way means that they are no longer a part of the chart. Inner planetary chains... paint pictures.. way more of a personalized signature. Allen. Virgo cancer virgo -yes. How is it.. that universal energy only gives one the ability to be successful to the point of genius? because its been given that name. And I think the returns make a difference in this conversation. The planets that were for centuries viewed w/the eyes were once the only planets in a persons chart. That is the Sun to Saturn. And with Saturn having a 28 year return it was significant that that at one time was a long life span. The discovery of Uranus happened about the time that Mozart was writing much of his music and I really don't know how weighted Uranus was in his chart but he is considered to be one of the great Aquarians. There are many great Aquarian names (well Capriquarious?) Many were around at the time of that planet being discovered. What am I saying... Oh yes the outer planets are considered generational planets and that means they influence a whole generation. And their RETURN (of that planet into the original place in a natal chart) MAY NOT OCCUR IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFETIME. I am sure there are astrologers on this discussion that know the return estimates of the Outer/Generational planets. So when you look to them they can give you a sense of community. And that is where Aquarius' ruler started. Aquarius signifying unity of the masses. (Just one interpretation,)Uranus transit return in the chart is 82 to 84 years of age and not everyone will live that long to experience that type of transit so you look to the body of people it effects the most. Neptunes transits are even longer and I am not sure when they will have studied the first transit of Pluto since it was discovered only in the 20th century. Also the study of the signifigance of the timing and body of work of the discovery of the outer planets plays a role and the mythology that is chosen to accompany the body in the solar system. I don't go in for weights in a chart they don't really make a lot of sense to me. But then again I am not an eastern astrologer. The scientific and theoretical basis of a planet what it means for the individual and populace is important and the Outer Planets are being studied at a much slower rate than the inner planets. Planets don't make us anything they provide and offer tendencies and trends. How we express or react to them is another thing. I have Uranus in the tenth house trine my parellel stellium as well as is contra parallel to those planets. Perhaps Allan was questioning why the outer planets are seen in that light -I think -but I could be wrong. Personally anything in the angular houses can be a pretty noticeable trait in the natal chart be it; the faster moving planets personal or the generational ones. I have seen some down to earth heavy Uranus themed charts in my day-generally folk with high ended occupations which call for sound structures yet be able to emprovise when it is necessary and very capiable of following guidelines and rules very well too. I haven't managed to realize whether the house positions show compulsive inclinations or whether they represent areas you choose to focus on conscientiously. But I tend to believe that they are indeed compulsive. With me it's the 9th house cluster that makes me compulsively seek truth higher meanings in life. I just can't help thinking that life would mean more if on my death bed I am much wiser than I started out whether I receive recognition or not. After all we'll all be alone at the end. " That's interesting.. but that would mean u'd express the energy of an element only in the area shown by an angle?I mean if fire rules ur MC u' re only firy in pursuit of social status and finding ur place in the world but maybe not as firy in relationships cuz ur DC is in earth.. or am I completely off target here? It would be interesting to see how the IC channels fire energy then.. would that indicate a hidden passionate nature? Or the other way around what if someone has fire on the IC but no fire planets ( like me..)? Actually. I thought considering the Ascendant in calculating element and mode predominance kinda made sense to me. I came across this one site that weighed the Sun. Moon and Ascendant as equally influential. And personally. I have a lot of the Virgo traits branded in my psychological make-up which I can't explain otherwise since my personal planets are equally divided into Pisces and Gemini influences. Then again it may be that the angles aren't part of the "raw potential" one is endowed with at birth but the Rising being the "physical body" the part of us that's exposed and responsible for "perceiving" the world gives the psyche the "soul" feedback and thus is an important part in shaping our personality from early childhood and throughout our lives. I think the House system that works best for a person is the house system that more accurately reflects their own direct firsthand experience of the forces' (planets) placement. For example if you have Saturn in the 4th House in Placidus and Saturn in the 5th house in Koch. I'd ask myself what area of my life -- between family stuff and creative stuff -- have I experienced the most insecurity ambition to overcome those fears and where i need the most sttructure. In terms of my own astrological practice with clients I do not know. I alternate between both Koch and Placidus if the client is born in the extreme northern or southern hemispheres (arctic curle etc). I use Porphory to avoid the extreme chart distortions that would occur if I used Koch or Placidus there. I do not use the Equal House system though I hear it's good for horary predictions. For example for some charts the planet Uranus may hold greater influence than let's say the Moon. While another chart may indicate the Moon holds the most clout or influence or relevance.
